10 Tests to Predict How Well You’ll Age

October 2, 2025

Wondering how well you’ll age? This aging well test includes 10 simple physical tests that help predict your future mobility, strength, balance, and independence.

Who wants to live to 100?

Be honest—did you just hesitate?

Most people do! It’s not the number that scares us, it’s the idea of spending our golden years feeling, well, not so golden.

But what if you could reach 100 and still do all the things you love? That’s the real goal, and it’s possible if you focus on one thing: physical resilience.

Let’s talk about what really gets in the way of aging well. It’s not just genetics or luck—it’s often a single, sneaky event: an orthopedic injury, like low back pain, a bad shoulder or even a hip fracture. Did you know that if you’re over 65 and break your femur, there’s a 30-40% chance you won’t survive the next year?

Read that again… I’ll wait

Even if you survive, there’s a 50% chance you’ll never return home (live independently) again.

But here’s the good news: most of these incidents are preventable with the right habits and a little self-knowledge.

That’s where the Physical Resilience Outlook comes in.

10 tests that make sure you are aging successfully.  These quick checks measure what really keeps you thriving—mobility, strength, balance, and endurance.

Here are the tests:

Bar Hang:

When’s the last time you hung from a bar? This test checks your grip strength and shoulder mobility—two things that are surprisingly linked to longevity!

Step Test:

Can you handle stairs? Don’t rush to buy that ranch home just yet—being able to climb steps is a great sign of resilience.

Balance:

Stand on one foot for 30 seconds. If you can do it, you’re less likely to fall and nothing good happens when you fall.

Vertical Jump:

How high can you go? Power matters, especially as you age.

Three-Cone Drill:

A classic agility test—and agility is key as you age.

Sit & Rise:

Can you get down to the floor and back up without using your hands? This one’s a big predictor of independence.

Deadlift:

No, you don’t need to lift a barbell—just pick up something heavy (like a sandbag) from the ground.

Push-Up:

Upper body strength is vital, and push-ups are a simple way to measure it.

Farmer’s Carry:

Carry heavy weights in each hand and walk. It’s functional, and it’s harder than it looks!

Rockport Test:

Walk a mile and measure your heart rate. This gives you a good idea of your cardiovascular fitness (aka VO2 max).

Each test is scored out of 10, for a total of 100 points. The higher your score, the better your chances of staying active, independent, and happy as you age.

The best part? It’s never too late to start improving. Whether you want to golf at 100, travel the world, or just keep up with your great grandkids, these tests can help you set goals and track your progress. So, get moving, have fun, and remember: the secret to a long, happy life isn’t just living longer—it’s living better!
