Rita Granitz

A friend suggested Robbins Rehab to me after a hamstring and foot injury. I was extremely impressed with the professionalism of all the staff, yet the the atmosphere was comfortable and reassuring, from my initial complimentary evaluation with Nick through my several weeks of rehab. I have since recommended Robbins to friends and relatives! Robbins would be my “go to” should I require rehab in the future.

Jennifer Masters

I was not able to walk or stand on my right foot after my surgery. But after working with Heather and the team, I am able to walk normal with no pain at all in my foot and stand. And the exercises are very easy to continue doing at home before and after work. They made it very fun and enjoyable to come in to do my therapy. I am so happy and thankful for everything everyone has done for me here at Robbins Rehab!!

You spend an incredible amount of time using your feet every day. When you’re suffering from foot and ankle pain, it often greatly impacts your life. It can cause dread and agony when taking the stairs, walking a block to your office, standing at work, exercising, or even driving your car.

At Robbins Rehabilitation West, our team provides physical therapy for foot and ankle pain designed to help you move with less pain, restore function, and get back on track.

Do You Know What’s Causing Your Foot or Ankle Pain?

Foot and ankle pain can occur suddenly due to an acute injury, or it can develop over time because of a chronic, underlying condition. Whether your pain started after a sports injury, a long shift on your feet, a fall, or no obvious cause at all, identifying the source of the problem is the first step toward lasting relief.

Our physical therapists will conduct a thorough examination to confirm what’s causing your pain. From there, they will create a personalized treatment plan designed specifically for your needs, goals, and activity level.

If you’re looking for physical therapy for foot pain, physical therapy for ankle injuries, or ongoing support for chronic discomfort, our team is here to help you get back to the life you love.

Common Causes of Foot and Ankle Pain

Foot and ankle pain can come from many different injuries or conditions. Some of the most common causes include:

Fallen Arches or Flat Feet

Your foot contains several tendons that work together to form your arch. When the tendons pull together properly, your foot will form a proper arch.

However, when the tendons don’t pull together correctly, your foot may form a very small arch or no arch at all. We call this a “fallen arch” or “flat foot” and can cause pain or discomfort over time.

Arthritis

Arthritis is a common inflammatory condition that affects the joints and results in pain. The most common types include osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Both types of arthritis can greatly impact the foot and ankle joints, making it harder to walk, exercise, or complete daily activities without discomfort.

Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome

Tarsal tunnel syndrome takes place when the nerve that runs from the ankle to the foot becomes pinched or inflamed. This can lead to pain, tingling, burning, or discomfort in the foot and ankle.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is inflammation in the connective tissue on the bottom of your foot. This can result from aggravated overuse, such as constant standing, improper posture, or footwear that lacks proper arch support.

For many people, foot physical therapy can help improve mobility, reduce strain, and address the movement issues contributing to plantar fascia pain.

Bursitis

Bursitis occurs when tendons rub against the bursae, or anti-friction sacs, causing them to become irritated and uncomfortable.

Tendinitis

Tendinitis derives from excessive overuse of the tendons, causing them to become inflamed over time. This can make walking, running, climbing stairs, or standing for long periods painful.

Fractures

A fracture occurs from excessive force or trauma to the bone, causing it to crack or break entirely. A fracture to the foot or ankle could result in weeks of downtime to ensure proper healing.

Once it is safe to begin rehabilitation, physical therapy may help restore strength, mobility, and function.

Strains and Sprains

A strain happens when a muscle or tendon is stretched too far or torn. A sprain occurs when a ligament is stretched too far or torn.

Ankle sprains are especially common, and ankle physical therapy can be an important part of recovery. With the right treatment plan, you can rebuild strength, improve balance, and reduce the risk of future injury.

How Can Physical Therapy Treat Foot and Ankle Pain?

Whether you’re suffering from an acute injury or a chronic condition, our physical therapists can help you find the right path forward.

Your therapist will begin with a thorough evaluation of your mobility, balance, range of motion, severity of pain, and physical goals. Robbins’ physical therapy approach is not cookie-cutter; each treatment plan is built around the individual patient’s needs, goals, and condition.

If you sustained an acute injury, your physical therapist may recommend rest, ice, compression, and elevation (RICE) during the first few days to help decrease swelling. After the initial stage of your injury, you will move on to specialized physical therapy treatments.

If you’re suffering from a chronic condition, you may begin with specialized treatments based on the needs of your condition. This is all part of your holistic healing or pain management program.

The goal is to help you get back to your normal level of physical performance and prevent future problems from occurring.

Personalized Ankle Pain Treatment That Helps You Move Better

Your treatment plan for ankle pain treatment may include a combination of exercises and stretching to restore joint mobility, improve balance, and strengthen the muscles that support the foot and ankle.

Your plan may also include balance board exercises and specialized services such as ice and heat therapies, manual therapy, ultrasound, bracing, or other physical therapy techniques based on your condition and goals. Robbins’ physical therapy programs focus on pain relief, strengthening, and functional integration so patients can return to the activities they care about.

We’ll do all we can to ease your pain and help you regain confidence in your movement. This may include recommending lifestyle changes, at-home exercises, or orthotic footwear to prevent more problems in the future.
