Cheryl Gilbert

I recently completed therapy at Robbins Rehabilitation West. I was referred there because I was experiencing pain in both shoulders due to osteoarthritis and in the lumbar spine resulting from an impingement. Emily and Dan worked with me to identify exercises that addressed the problem areas that were interfering with my ability to function in a variety of life’s activities. I experienced improvement very early in treatment. By the time I completed physical therapy, I was able to return to normal activities with only occasional discomfort. During this time, I had acquired an understanding of an aftercare plan that I now utilize on a regular basis to make certain I maintain the progress I have made. Emily and Dan and their support staff were knowledgeable , patient, and supportive at all times. I have nothing but praise for this group of professionals.

I should have written this review sooner! I went to Robbins Rehab for a torn tendon in my shoulder. Everyone was fantastic and made the rehab fun. I would highly recommend everyone here. I went 3 times a week for 6 weeks and I was as good as new. The surgeon was impressed but disappointed he couldn’t operate. Lol

Does lifting a jar onto a high shelf cause sharp discomfort? Do you avoid sleeping on your side because shoulder pain wakes you up at night? Has a recent injury limited your ability to move your arm freely? Shoulder pain can disrupt even the simplest daily tasks, making work, exercise, and rest feel frustrating or impossible.

Shoulder pain can range from mild soreness to severe, debilitating discomfort. Some people experience temporary pain from overuse, while others struggle with long-term issues caused by injury or degeneration.

No matter the type of shoulder injury, there is good news: physical therapy for shoulder pain offers effective, non-invasive solutions designed to restore movement, strength, and comfort. With the right shoulder injury treatment, many patients are able to avoid surgery and long-term reliance on medication.

Understanding Shoulder Pain

The shoulder is one of the most complex joints in the body. It allows for a wide range of motion, but that flexibility also makes it vulnerable to injury. The shoulder joint is a ball-and-socket joint where the head of the upper arm bone fits into the socket of the shoulder blade. Surrounding this joint is a network of cartilage, ligaments, muscles and tendons, bursae, and the rotator cuff—all working together to stabilize and move the arm.

When any of these structures becomes irritated, inflamed, weakened, or damaged, shoulder pain can develop. Depending on the cause, pain may occur only during certain movements, such as reaching overhead, or it may be constant and aching. Acute injuries can result in sharp pain and limited mobility, while chronic conditions often cause stiffness, weakness, or discomfort that worsens over time.

Because the shoulder relies so heavily on coordinated movement, even small issues can significantly affect function. This is why early shoulder pain treatment is essential to prevent worsening symptoms and long-term limitations.

Common Causes of Shoulder Pain

There are many potential causes of shoulder pain, ranging from overuse injuries to age-related degeneration. Some of the most common conditions include:

Rotator Cuff Injuries

The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that stabilize the shoulder joint. Rotator cuff injuries can include strains, tears, or inflammation caused by repetitive motion, heavy lifting, or sudden trauma. These injuries often lead to pain when lifting or rotating the arm.

Shoulder Impingement

Shoulder impingement occurs when tendons or bursae become compressed during arm movement, especially overhead motion. This can cause sharp or aching pain and may worsen with activity.

Frozen Shoulder

Also known as adhesive capsulitis, frozen shoulder causes stiffness, pain, and reduced range of motion. It often develops after prolonged immobilization or surgery but can also occur without a clear cause.

Tendonitis and Bursitis

Overuse or repetitive strain can inflame the tendons or bursae, resulting in pain, swelling, and difficulty with movement.

Arthritis

Degeneration of cartilage within the shoulder joint can cause persistent pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility, especially with age.

Dislocations and Traumatic Injuries

A fall, collision, or sudden force can cause the shoulder to dislocate or sustain structural damage. These injuries often require guided rehabilitation to restore stability and function.

How Physical Therapy Helps Shoulder Pain in Lehigh Valley

Many people assume that shoulder pain automatically requires surgery or long-term medication. In reality, physical therapy treatment for shoulder pain is often the most effective first line of care. Physical therapy addresses the root cause of pain rather than masking symptoms, helping patients heal safely and naturally.

A licensed shoulder injury physical therapist begins by performing a thorough evaluation. This includes assessing posture, strength, flexibility, range of motion, and movement patterns. Imaging results, such as X-rays or MRIs, may also be reviewed to better understand the condition.

Based on the findings, your therapist creates a personalized shoulder injury treatment plan designed to restore movement, improve stability, and reduce pain. Treatment plans are tailored to your diagnosis, activity level, and goals.

Physical Therapy Techniques for Shoulder Pain

Pain Relief and Inflammation Reduction

Early treatment often focuses on reducing pain and inflammation. Manual therapy, targeted stretching, and activity modification help calm irritated tissues and improve comfort.

Improving Range of Motion

Stiffness is common with shoulder injuries. Gentle mobility exercises help restore flexibility and allow the joint to move more freely.

Strengthening Muscles and Tendons

Strengthening the surrounding muscles and tendons is essential for shoulder stability. Targeted exercises improve support around the joint and protect against reinjury.

Correcting Movement Patterns

Poor posture or movement mechanics often contribute to shoulder pain. Physical therapy retrains how the shoulder moves during daily tasks, work activities, and sports.

Functional Training

As symptoms improve, therapy progresses to functional movements that mimic real-life activities, helping patients return to work, exercise, and hobbies safely.

This comprehensive approach makes physical therapy for shoulder injuries in PA a highly effective option for both acute and chronic shoulder conditions.

What to Expect During Shoulder Physical Therapy

Your physical therapist will guide you through each stage of recovery, adjusting your treatment plan as you improve. Sessions typically include hands-on therapy, guided exercises, and education on posture, ergonomics, and activity modification.

Consistency is key. Following your therapist’s recommendations—both in the clinic and at home—helps ensure proper healing and long-term results. Many patients notice improvements in pain and mobility within the first few weeks of treatment.
